What are residue free solvents?
Residue free solvents are known for their ability to leave no residue behind on the surface they are applied to. An effective residue free solvent will leave no trace behind on a surface even after evaporation.
In certain cleaning circumstances, it can be highly beneficial to use a solvent that leaves no residue behind after its use. Most of the time, these solvents will be utilized when residue can possibly damage equipment or surfaces that it is being applied to. Some examples of areas where these solvents are necessary include:
- Electronic equipment
- Automotive equipment
- Floor cleaning
Why can residue damage equipment?
Residues that are left behind can build up over time and damage equipment or create a safety hazard to workers. Residual solvents used for cleaning can even be counterproductive, because you may have to clean more often if the residue attracts dirt and contaminants. When used for electronic equipment, residual solvents can:
- Hinder electronic current, preventing the equipment from working
- Attract or absorb dirt and dust (which can collect over time in small compartments)
- Obstruct moving or rotating parts in the equipment
What are some examples of residue free solvents?
- Acetone
- Mineral spirits
- Isopropyl alcohol
Acetone is an example of a residue free solvent that has a very quick evaporation rate. Mineral spirits are usually used for thinning oil-based paints and for dissolving grease and oil from certain surfaces. Isopropyl alcohol, potentially the most desired and reliable mild solvent for residue-free cleaning, can be toxic to humans if ingested or inhaled, but presents a low concern for environmental harm. Isopropyl alcohol is a good multi-purpose disinfectant solvent that can be used to clean a large variety of metal surfaces and equipment.
