Why is perchloroethylene unsafe?

Why is perchloroethylene unsafe?

Perchloroethylene, also known as tetrachloroethylene, is a clear, colorless chemical solution with the chemical formula C2Cl4. It is commonly utilized in the dry-cleaning process, in the manufacturing of other chemicals such as trichloroacetic acid and fluorocarbons, and as a metal degreasing agent.

The Dangers of Perchloroethylene

Despite its versatility and seemingly desirable qualities, perchloroethylene is considered to be a hazardous chemical. Short-term exposure to perchloroethylene can cause health afflictions such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Incoordination
  • Nose and throat irritation
  • Skin and eye irritation

Perchloroethylene not only causes these acute health effects. It also has the potential to cause liver and kidney damage, reproductive system damage, and even cancer. Specifically, it has been associated with multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and bladder cancer. In addition, perchloroethylene has been classified as likely carcinogenic to humans by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

How to Stay Safe When Using Perchloroethylene

Given all of the negative health impacts of perchloroethylene listed above, the usage of perchloroethylene should clearly be avoided whenever possible. However, in situations where it must be used, the proper precautions must be taken to minimize these effects.

The Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) for perchloroethylene, as established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), is 100 ppm over any 8-hour shift, with a ceiling of 200 ppm, and a maximum of 300 ppm within a 5-minute period over any 3-hour span. Additionally, those working with perchloroethylene should wear the needed personal protective equipment, such as gloves, face shields, and safety goggles.

Workplaces should enforce the proper protocols to ensure that these guidelines are followed. Finally, as with any industrial chemical, perchloroethylene’s Safety Data Sheet should be read before for detailed safety instructions.
